Credit card companies and responsible customers

Credit cardsSo you're about to pay for something when you find your credit card provider has slashed your credit limit.

Jan Johnson, who lives in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, contacted us after Santander wrote to say that it was reducing the limit on her Asda credit card from £5,000 to £300. The teacher, who regularly spends around £1,500 a month on the card, always paying in full each month, has repeatedly asked Santander why it picked on her but, in spite of a lengthy correspondence, has failed to get a straight answer.

Some credit card companies are picking on customers with excellent credit histories who pay every month.

I'm also a credit card customer who pays off the bill in full every month. I've noticed that my company (Barclaycard) has increasingly started to query transactions on my account.  These aren't even particularly unusual transactions; in most cases they are transactions that I charge on a regular basis.

This wouldn't be part of a concerted campaign to encourage me to find another credit card provider, would it?  So they can focus their energies on the substantially more profitable customers who carry a balance forward...
