Joe Lee, you're a hero

There's a good letter in today's City AM:

Held accountable

I watched Nick Clegg’s interview on BBC Breakfast TV yesterday morning and was furious to hear him say “for those who can't afford an accountant to fiddle their taxes”. How dare he. I assume therefore that he does his own return?

I’m fed up of politicians referring to accountants as one degree away from criminals. Professional, qualified accountants like myself have a high degree of integrity and abide by the UK tax laws, we do not “fiddle” taxes.

I totally agree. Clegg's assault on our profession demonstrates a total lack of understanding of what tax accountants actually do. He should be ashamed of himself.

  1. Well said. I have an accountant who does my annual accounts simply so I do stay legal with taxes, filing etc. She turns my big pile of invoices and receipts into acceptable paperwork thats easy to understand. And make sure I pay the tax due, not a penny less and not a penny more.

Interestingly, the one group of people who I have heard fiddle things..... are the people Nick Clegg sits in a room with. We call them MPs.

  2. Well spotted CM, and yes, nice one Joe.

The trouble is, we tend to work for another quasi-criminal class; the self-employed who, according to one (PAYE-cushioned) caller to LBC this morning, are all hiding their income and dodging taxes.
